Accessibility at MHADA
Housing is for everyone — and so is this portal. We are committed to making every feature usable by people with disabilities, on every device, in every Indian context.
What we commit to
These are the specific things we design and test for on every release. Where we fall short, please tell us — we prioritise accessibility fixes above most feature work.
For users with visual impairments
- •Meaningful alt text on informative images
- •Colour contrast ratios that meet or exceed WCAG AA (4.5:1 for body text)
- •Fully functional with VoiceOver, TalkBack and NVDA screen readers
- •Text can be resized up to 200% without loss of functionality
- •Focus indicators visible on all interactive elements
For keyboard-only users
- •Every interactive element is reachable with the Tab key
- •Visible focus ring on buttons, links and form fields
- •No keyboard traps — you can always tab away from any component
- •Skip-to-content link at the top of every page
For users with hearing impairments
- •Captions and transcripts for any portal tutorial or help video
- •Critical alerts are communicated by text and icon — never by sound alone
- •SMS fallback for OTP and notification delivery
For multilingual users
- •Available in English and Marathi (मराठी) throughout the portal
- •Language switcher in the header on every page; your choice persists across sessions
- •Key policy documents published in both languages
For users on low-bandwidth or older devices
- •Mobile-first layout that works on screens as narrow as 320px
- •Pages remain usable on 3G connections — heavy images are lazy-loaded
- •Tested on devices running Android 8+ and iOS 13+
Standards we follow
We align with international and Indian guidelines for government websites. Conformance is reviewed on every major release and formally audited twice a year.
| WCAG 2.1 — target conformance | Level AA |
| Applicable guidelines | GIGW 3.0 (Guidelines for Indian Government Websites) |
| RPwD Act, 2016 — Section 40 | Progressively applied |
| Last manual audit | March 2026 |
| Next scheduled audit | September 2026 |
Known issues we are working on
These are the accessibility gaps we know about. If you see something not listed here, please report it.
- The map view on the properties page has partial keyboard support. A list-only alternative is available as a fallback.
- The PDF rent agreement preview uses a scanned layout. A tagged, screen-reader friendly copy is generated on request via the dashboard.
- Marathi translations are complete for all core flows but ~15% of error messages still display in English. Full translation coverage is planned for the next release.
Report an accessibility barrier
If any part of the portal is not accessible to you, tell us — with as much detail as you can (URL, device, assistive technology). We aim to respond within 5 working days.
